What is Autism

Autism is a complex neurological disorder developmental which usually appears during the first two years of life which impacts development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Children and adults on the autism spectrum typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (a category of neurological disorders characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development), which affecting approximately 1 in 100 births. It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans today have some form of autism and the number is growing.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, autism is growing at a rate of 10-17 percent each year and it is four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls.
